The environment is dungeon like, while the walls are fairly nondescript and repetative they still crafted well enough to keep the atmosphere intact. The same can be said for the tiles, chains, torches and other asthetic adornments. The monsters are smooth, well articulated and rounded with an ounce of cuteness that gives a warm feel to the game, even when being gouged to death.Simple. I don't mean that in terms of depth but in ease of use, as in a few clicks and you are away. The character generation is neither bogged down in comnplex choices nor overly cumbersome. While I do enjoy character creation that is complex and deep, I don't feel it is necessary to the enjoyment of a game every time. Games like Wizardry 8 for example, while in this genre, would terrify someone not familiar with such games, whereas this one would not. Sometimes all that is needed to build a bond between you and your party are names that mean something or are fun. I went with 'Bob, Robert, Bobby Sue and Bobette.'Nostalgia. It's clear that the creator loves the genre and has had some experience of the classics. There are touches of many other games in here for both the more recent convert to the old school. As mentioned in another review the sound of the Amiga hard drive will make some chuckle and others scratch their heads.Cons:While there are many small things most of them nuances that vary from game to game and just take getting used to. The only real issue I had, and unfortunately it is a really big one, is the lag. There is a distinct lag in combat that means that you are unable to be as nimble as you can in other games. In fact even the original Dungeon Master, made three decades ago, allowed more freedom of movement. I found myself repeatedly hitting a direction key, while being attacked, but the party seemed unable to move. Had my computer been old or obselete I may have been able to pin it on that. but it is not. Also the fact that outside of combat I did not have the issue means that it is an integral problem.*UPDATE*Since writing this the Developer commented that the combat issue is by design. Once you have commited to cmbat you are bound for a certain time. While annoying it does get around the 'tricks,' in other games where you could simple walk around a monster and hit it repeatedly. All you needed was four squares. Because of this revelation I am going to change my review from not recommended to recommedned. Knowing that this is deleiberate, and more realistic, makes the game more enjoyable. Now I know that if I am not ready to fight, I need to run until I am. So there you have it. Pretty, nostalgic but very hard early on. This is definately for those that like a challenge.. Not DM, Not EOB, Not LOG.Pros:Looks Nice. Pretty, nostalgic but very hard early on. This is definately for those that like a challenge.. A few seconds after startup the game goes to a blue screen with a red cursor. Not like a BSOD, just... an uninteractive field of soft blue. Completely unplayable.I will be seeking a refund and I suggest not buying it. I can run games like Total War: Warhammer on ultra without a hitch, so this is clearly due to lack of proper testing.Edit: upon further testing from the dev and another customer, it was discovered that Malwarebytes and Windows Defender (and possibly other AV suites?) interfere with the game on some level. Adding an exception got it running nicely, and I can happily change this to a thumbs up now.Back to kicking bubblegum and chewing♥♥♥♥♥. If your hard up for a Dungeon Masterish feeling you may like this.Keep these things in mind before buying. No resting. At least no way I have ever found. You need to just sit there and wait for health and mana to come back.Clunky combat and not balanced at all. A bat or rat can very easily wipe the whole party. And if you get more than one at a time or right after each other your screwed.. Pros:-Looks decent enough for me, monster design is okay-Allows you to use trap doors, spikes, sentries, etc. to your advantage (And you'll desperately need it)-Has a lot of secrets-There are no safe encounters. Even the weakest enemies are threats-Has a cool soundtrack-CheapCons:-Placing your characters in the front/back row doesn't seem to have any effect on their likelihood to get hit (from my experience)-Basically no tooltips. I have no clue what the stats do, what the stats requirements for different items are, what item what kind of debuff triggers and how high the chance of that ocurring is-Balance issues. Monster can kill characters in 2 hits while you might need 40. This makes even "simple" battles against rats ridiculously hard and unnecessary long. Kiting is often the my only option to kill certain monsters and that can be really time consuming.-Time consuming x2. Regenerating mana and hp might need ~3 minutes and you can't tab out (which is intended and okay I guess). It's absolutely necessary to do that, especially in floors with traps you can't avoid. You'll need a lot of patience.(Although I've been playing PC games for a more than 20 years I've never played the old dungeon crawlers and maybe some of the flaws I pointed out are actually an essential part of them like the missing tooltips. It could be part of the game to discover the properties of certain melee weapons for example.)I've died often and maybe it's because I didn't roll long enough or have a bad party setup but I'm still having a lot of fun. I recommmend it if you have patience and enjoy hard challenges. Also: As far as I know this game was done by just one guy, so props for that.edit: Just saved before walking on a trap. Game saved a few frames after I started and now my file is useless. Since manual saving deletes all autosaves I'd have to start from scratch. ♥♥♥♥ this.
